INTRODUCTION

Hello, my name is Henry Daniel, this is my first medium post, so thank you for reading my experience. I started my design journey back in senior high, I was always fascinated by sketches and concept arts for products or services. I believe designers solve problems and I would like to lend my strength to solving a problem using my skills.

HOW I STARTED MY JOURNEY IN DESIGN

During my youth service I was presented with the opportunity to learn UI/UX Design, however it was a bit rushed and i could not learn the dept of designing. Ever since i have been to YouTube to learn tutorials, but you see without a definite structure of learning, there is only a little that can be learned.

HOW I GOT INTO DESIGN 101

I sought out to find a design school to enroll in to really learn designing, and after searching endlessly, a tweet popped onto my timeline and i quickly checked the details, @think_senpai handle was tweeting about the commencement of their classes, the comments under the tweet featured their past students who reminisced the experience of their early design days, these were individuals that have made names for themselves in the design industry. I had no reason to hesitate joining.

MY FIRST WEEK WITH DESIGN 101

Honestly, when I saw it was an online class, I was kind of skeptical, because I really don't do well with online lectures, but when I got the first week’s email, which entails the class outline, I was pretty much surprised as to how i could adapt, the links where easy to understand, the videos where concise and the explanation was clear and easy to grasp.

CHALLENGES AND HOW I OVERCAME THEM

In the first week, the first challenge I had was the plethora of information I had and which one I should consume first posed a problem. There were books, links, videos I had no idea about in designing that were suddenly all available to me, so knowing the one first to take in posed a challenge, in short, I was overloaded with information.

However, a podcast was linked in the email, which talked about how designers could avoid being overloaded with information, also in the class channel we discussed this, as it was a problem faced by other students too, @think_senpai encouraged us to only select information that would be beneficial to us at that said time. That was how I could solve the problem of information overload.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT SO FAR

The most interesting thing I have learnt so far would be the application of Gestalt’s principles in designing, these thing have always being there but I have failed to identify them or implement them when designing. It was fun implementing these principles to my design

WHAT I HAVE CREATED SO FAR

CONCLUSION

My experience in week one of Design 101 has been wonderful and filled with self-discovery, my colleagues and mentor are awesome people, who were ready to learn and impact knowledge respectively. I am sure that by the end of the course I would be more than equipped to start a much more professional journey in designing.

Thank you for reading and stay safe.
